Hot Springs National Park has the unique distinction of being the first park set aside by the U.S. Government, making it the first National Park. Although the park does not conform to today's idea of a National Park, it keeps its prestigious title. It does preserve several historic bathhouses built starting in the late 1800s. Instead of preserving the hot springs in their natural state, the park keeps them capped to provide water to the bathhouses and surrounding city.
